Decorating with strands of lights - what do you think?

I do like the soft glow and ambiaence of fairy lights - which have been in a lot of interiors for some time now, but for some reason whenever I turn mine on (I have one strand in a bedroom corner), I always feel like it's a bit contrived - or just so obviously staged. What do you guys think? Do you have lights, and if so, how do you make them feel like you switched them on just like any other light?

I love the way those lights look on the floor, but in my house they'd fill with dust and dog hair and become a nightmare to clean.

I currently use lights in my living room. I do think it looks contrived, but I needed extra soft lighting. It was a quick, cheap fix.

Let me try this again...Long time lurker - first time commenting. Re: the lights. Nope. Just No. I may be too mid-western but these lights scream "holiday time" to me...Great blog, BTW...

I think that the strands of lights could be used in a creative way to make them seem more interesting while still creating their cozy ambiance. If they are just strung haphazardly around a window frame or something though, I definitely think they look contrived and even cheap.

Oh, see, I like them. A lot. The photos you posted are a ton of examples of them being used well. And when they're used well, the effect is really nice.

I love lights strung across a fireplace mantle. And now, thanks to you, I finally have an answer for my husband - when he asks me why I have been saving egg cartons for 3 years! I am definitely going to do that ... but will probably use them on the covered back porch.

To me first image looks like a homemade shrine. The other look nice and yes white Christmas lights are not just for Christmas any more. These are some good uses.

I like the lights - especially the ones around the mirrors - the floor ones no - maybe for a special occasion but it would become a hairball and dust trap. The flower ones are fabulous too!

The last few light ideas stand out from the rest. Lights are fantastic design options. Especially when the lights themselves feature great design. The last piece is simply stunning.

Hrm. Reminds me a little too much of college, when EVERYONE had them in their dorm rooms.

BUt I love them outdoors strung through the trees while dining a la fresco!

I like them if they are done well in the right setting. Maybe they aren't appropriate year-round in your formal living room, but in a casual cottagey home, sure.

I think the light they give off is amazing, but I prefer not to see the source. Therefore, I've used them above my kitchen cabinets to put glow in the kitchen... and in a tall West Elm vase that glowed perfectly. I received lots of complements... and it always made me smile because yes, the strands of lights are cheap... and beautiful!

Great post! I think it is all in the application. They have to be the white wire, not the green. I prefer them most on a porch or behind a sheer fabric for a soft glow. One thing that is great about them is they can be almost as romantic as candles but safer. I am working on decorating my porch and I will probably incorporate them somehow. :)~Claudia

Hi - I realize I am commenting on a post from July, but being a fairly new subscriber I just saw this link under your most recent one (which btw was wonderful). I have been a long time user of the white strands of lights. They are perfect for those spots where an ambient glow is necessary. I found strands of 20 at Wal-mart and they are just the right number to place inside a bowl of pinecones in the foyer, along the back edge of a mantel, etc. Overused it would become tacky. But here and there it's quite effective. I get compliments all the time. So, yeah, I love them!
